Chinoiserie at Jumeirah Carlton Tower

Chinoiserie (2)Continuing our perpetual hunt for a good cheesecake in London, we decided to give the one at the Chinoiserie (inside the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel) a try as we’d heard rumblings of their great cheesecake. We made our way over there to see if the hype was true and were directed to the restaurant located on the ground floor right next to the main entrance of the hotel.

We have nothing but good things to say about the staff and the service, but the cheesecake is just ok. Now here’s what it has going for it: it isn’t too sweet and it does have a slightly tangy flavor, which is missing from so many cheesecakes these days (given the lack of understanding of what a cheesecake is supposed to be outside of NYC).

Plain Cheesecake

What it doesn’t have going for it: it’s £12, a tiny serving for the price, and it’s pretty ordinary. The biscuit isn’t crisp, it’s flaky and cakey, the cheesecake is almost too air-like and insubstantial, and the flavor is really weak. It tastes more like eating nothing than eating cheesecake. It’s certainly not bad, but it’s not even very good, so I’d say pass. If you are going to be crazy enough to spend that type of money on cheesecake, it needs to be either the best in the world or twice the size of your face, so please spend £2 more and head over the JW Steakhouse, which actually does serve the best cheesecake in the UK.
