I had higher hopes for this place, but it just didn’t live up to expectations. I love the concept of a Nordic Bakery – there aren’t many of them and Nordic cuisine generally is not very accessible. So, when we heard of this place, we had to try it.
On a Saturday afternoon around 5 pm, the place was pretty crowded. In fact, I’m pretty sure we grabbed the last available table. The vibe is nice, lots of wood, modern, rustic. It’s a pretty long and narrow space and feels cozy. The pastries and small sandwiches are presented nicely at the front and we browsed to see what we should choose.
Not being very familiar with the cuisine, we attempted to ask questions of the staff. They were not having it. First of all, there were about 5 staff members behind the register. Why, I’m not sure. Very over staffed, but under helpful. They honestly could not be bothered with our questions and thought it absurd that we weren’t familiar with what was in each offering. They ended up just giving us a recipe book to look through which listed each ingredient. So weird. You’d think they’d like to talk about and explain the uniqueness of their cuisine, but not at all.
We settled on the apple tosca bun, rustic oatmeal cookie, flat white (which they call a short cappuccino), and a cappuccino. Their coffee was so bitter and bad quality. I would definitely not recommend it.
As for the pastries, I can’t say they were much better. The oatmeal cookie had mostly oats with a small amount of flour, hazelnuts, chocolate, and raisins. It was shockingly thin, which could’ve been cool if the cookie had otherwise worked out, but it didn’t. It was so greasy and oily – I’ve never seen a cookie like that. It fell apart the second you picked it up and dripped grease (literally), soaking through wax paper and napkins. It was also too sweet and lacked any substance. The apple tosca bun is a sweet bun with an almond topping. Pretty bland, kind of dry, less sweet than the cookie, but would not recommend this either.
Wish the place had been better. Good concept.
