Ottolenghi

Ottolenghi (2)So many people like this place, but we are less enthused. We’ve had both hits and misses with the desserts, but we cannot speak for the meal foods as we’ve never tried them.

There are several locations throughout the city and every location has about 15 different (and usually intriguing) baked goods and pastries made daily sitting out on the counter.

They look so pretty and always like they’ll taste good, but so many times they end up being quite mediocre, dry, and bland. Some are great – the flourless chocolate rum cake and the double chocolate chip cookie, for instance. But so many more are quite bad – the cheesecakes, the apple maple sponge cake, the caramelized plum cake, and the berry or fruit tarts to name a few. They look nice, but they just don’t taste it. There have been many times when we’ve gotten a dessert, had a couple of bites, and literally thrown away the rest. It looks so pretty that you want to buy it, but more than half of the time, it’s a flop. And a pretty big flop, too – not even just mediocre. There is almost always a weird, off taste. And because they are quite small and quite expensive, it’s not really worth a gamble.

Ottolenghi (1)I’d say go either for the meal food or stick exclusively to the chocolate desserts. Avoid everything else.
