Souvlaki GR

There are two locations of this place and of course their famous food truck that started it all. Haven’t been to the midtown location, just the LES one, which is the original. Tends to get crowded at peak times. It’s a cute place with some outdoor tables, and as much seating as possible inside. It’s a bit of an odd space, but they do their best to fill it without making people uncomfortably close. It’s decorated with the signature Greek accents of blue and white throughout and is really pretty casual.

Veggie Pita

The best thing here, I think, are by far the pitas. They have every classic filling you can imagine from chicken or pork souvlaki to burger, shrimp, and veggie. They all come with the same extras like red onion, tzatziki, and best of all FRIES! Having put fries in my burgers and sandwiches since I was little, I am so on board with the Greek trend of stuffing pitas with fries too. Just love it and it really adds deliciousness.

There are two kinds of veggie pita, one with tomato, cucumber, red onions, fries, olives and tatziki and the other that also includes eggplant, zucchini, and peppers. I prefer the first option, which is made up of all cold ingredients, except for the hot fries and pita. The cucumber, tomato, red onion, and olives are pre-mixed, so if you try to customize, they will have to chop each one up from scratch.

I will say the pita is pretty small and is definitely more of a snack than a meal. You’d have to get at least 2 to be full. But the pita itself is really the perfect pita: it is thick and soft and delicious. You could eat 10 of them plain one after the other. Because this is a traditional pita and not the Americanized version, there is no opening, so the the ingredients are rolled-up inside like an enchilada. The tzatziki sauce adds so much flavor and freshness and the fries are garlicky and super tasty.

Could easily get this as take out as well, or you could just order from their food truck downtown. Only room for improvement is the service (though nothing egregious) and I do wish the fillings were more plentiful. It’s a bit on the lean side. Otherwise, great food.
