Taro

This is a no frills joint, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised by the service as well as the food and have returned on several occasions.

Vegetable Curry
Vegetable Curry

The vegetable Japanese curry with rice is probably one of the best in the city. Really. It comes with broccoli, potatoes, and carrots with a side of steamed white rice. It’s a very generous amount of food and hearty enough to fill you up without being heavy.

The kappa maki roll and hand roll are just pretty standard. No complaints there, but nothing to write hope about either. The hand roll has a lot of rice and is bigger than the standard roll. The standard roll uses a chunk of cucumber instead of thinly sliced pieces, which isn’t my preference. and has only 4 pieces. Do note that for some odd reason they will automatically make it using wasabi on the inside of the roll. It’s an extra charge to make it without wasabi because apparently they have to then make you an individual roll, which they say can only be six pieces and is therefore more expensive. It’s a bit weird, but I’ve gotten them not to charge me extra for it. But regardless, in their normal 4 piece roll, the wasabi is only on one side and is quite a small amount, so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Taro (2)

Taro (4)The price and relative quality of some of their dishes (curry!) make it worth coming back here. On some nights it’s pretty busy, but we’ve never had to wait long for a table for two. There’s also a back room that serves to accommodate overflow.

Service is pretty good and prompt.
