I wanted to love this place so badly. I was looking forward to finally trying it, but it was so disappointing in multiple ways.

Brooklyn Blackout Cake

Brooklyn Blackout Cake – I am obsessed with chocolate, chocolate desserts, and specifically the brooklyn blackout cake. I had been looking forward to eating this cake at Ovenly for months. I finally tried it this past weekend and it was honestly so so foul. I’m not sure if the ingredients were literally expired (it had a rancid, sour taste) or it’s just a different kind of take on the cake, but wow was it not good. It also wasn’t a brooklyn blackout cake! It has no custard or pudding, it has no ganache, it has no cookie crumbs coating the outside. Instead there is a thick layer of terrible, hard, grocery store-like frosting in the middle and that same frosting coats the entire outside. I literally cut away all the frosting from the middle and outside and just ate the cake part. And unfortunately, it’s the cake part that had the rancid/spoiled taste. Just so bad. If you need a good brooklyn blackout cake, I’ll tell you where to go.

Also, I had no idea that they only offer one type of cake per day. This is so weird to me. You either want that cake or you don’t and you have no other options. It’s a bakery!

Also, every single one of their cookies is topped with salt. What’s up with that? Sure I guess that salt can pair well with sweets for some people, but come on – is it really original or fitting to just top every cookie and brownie/bar you make with salt? No thought is going into that, no analysis of whether it actually fits or not.

Lastly, the cashier is unbelievably slow. The line took forever because he couldn’t really answer any questions, didn’t have much info, and was constantly going in the back for minutes before coming back to help the next customer.

Just such a disappointing experience.
